How do you light hardscape elements like retaining walls and pillars?

Lighting walls and pillars is best done with low-voltage LED under-cap or recessed fixtures. The light glows softly downward and the wire runs behind the structure, keeping the whole look and feel clean.

A retaining wall or a set of driveway pillars can be a serious investment. During the day, they add structure and style to the property. But after dark, they tend to disappear entirely, except perhaps on the best moonlit nights, and that’s a shame when you think about how much went into building them.

Under-cap lighting is the technique that we so often come back to when it comes to retaining walls. This means adding LED strips or puck lights that mount underneath the cap stones and cast a soft downward wash that picks up the wall’s texture without showing the fixtures themselves. Stacked stone holds shadow detail beautifully. Smooth stone or stucco needs more careful angling to avoid hot spots. Brick takes warm tones especially well, so there's real range to work with here.

Pillars are even more flexible when it comes to lighting design, and you can uplight them from below if you want to emphasize height and the surface texture. But you can just as easily go with recessed top-down fixtures if you want to create an ambient glow at the base.

If you’re considering adding new hardscaping to your home, consider this as well: it’s easier to wire hardscape lighting if there are pre-drilled channels in the pillar. Retrofitting after construction is absolutely doable, but the level of effort is greater since you have to chisel into the stone.

Where a retaining wall includes a step transition, the lighting serves two purposes at once. It highlights the wall as an architectural element and illuminates the grade change so you can see your footing in low light.
